Our cities are at the mercy of an industrial food system that ships in high-calorie, low-nutrient, processed food from thousands of miles away. It leaves us disconnected from the comfort, the nourishment, and the taste of food — not to mention the people who grow it. The results are awful, from obesity and diabetes epidemics to massive impact on the planet. People want real, local food — food you can trust to nourish your body and the planet. And they want it all year round, grown in the cities where they live.
Having gathered together the experience gained in different parts of the planet, we came to the idea of growing greens and berries in a closed, autonomous and comprehensively controlled environment. As a format, it has been decided to use the sea container, which has mobility in combination with high structural strength. This format allows us to grow a wide range of crops, regardless of the climate zone, day length, season, and other external conditions. The freshest foods are grown in close proximity to the places of their sale or consumption, bypassing the stages of transportation and storage.
Each land plot that will be developed for this technology will reduce the need to use land for food production by a hundredfold. Land freed this way from cultivation can return to its natural state, which will contribute to the resumption of tree growth. In addition, CO2 emissions from transporting crops across continents and oceans will be reduced.
Since the produce will be grown under controlled conditions, it will be protected from extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods.
Year-round crop production increase
ECOtainer guarantees crop production throughout the year. 1 indoor hectare is equivalent to 4-6 or more outdoor hectares, depending on the crop grown. When we take strawberries, 1 indoor hectare can produce a crop corresponding to 30 open hectares. In addition, urban agriculture minimises contamination and post-harvest spoilage.
Organic crop production
The advantages of this technology can be further used in large-scale production of organic crops. Controlled growing conditions will reduce or completely eliminate the use of chemical pesticides.
Efficient energy consumption
Growing crops near the places where they are sold significantly reduces the consumption of fuel used for transportation.
Health and safety
ECOtainer reduces the professional risks associated with traditional farming. Such risks include accidents when handling agricultural equipment, infection with infectious diseases and poisoning with toxic chemicals.
There is no need to thermally or chemically treat and store crops when products are grown in close proximity to the point of sale. Therefore, products always remain fresh and do not lose their nutritional value.
CO2 emission reduction
Indoor crop production reduces or eliminates altogether the use of mechanical plows and other equipment, thereby reducing the burning of fossil fuels. The result will be a significant reduction in air pollution and CO2 emissions causing climate change.
Plants absorb water in order to obtain the necessary minerals and facilitate photosynthesis. About 95% of the water absorbed by the plant is returned to the atmosphere by transpiration (evaporation). ECOontainer turns the growing system into a completely enclosed environment within which 100% plant transpiration can be reused.
